Prayers to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

to Immaculate Mary

In 1942, Pope Pius XII dedicated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The following year he fixed the feast to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the Universal Church on August 22nd.

Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
(especially August 14 -- August 22)

Holy Mother Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
On August 15 we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption,
and on August 22, the Feast of the Immaculate Heart.

The novena is quite simple. It consists of these three parts (the prayers are given below):

1) State the intention of the novena.

2) Pray the Magnificat.

3) Pray the Litany of Loreto (ie, Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary).

Say each day for nine days.

We earnestly hope that you will join with us in praying this novena to Our Lady, and in celebrating, in a fitting manner, the two great Marian feasts with the intervening octave.

The Magnificat (Canticle of Mary)
(St. Luke 1:46-55)

My soul doth magnify the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant From this day all generations shall call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His Name He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever. Amen.

Immaculate Heart of Mary

O most pure heart of Mary, full of goodness, show your love towards us. Let the flame of your heart, O Mary, descend on all people. We love you immensely. Impress on our hearts true love so that we long for you. O Mary, gentle and humble of heart, remember us when we sin. You know that all people sin. Grant that through your most pure and motherly heart, we may be healed from every spiritual sickness. Grant that we may always experience the goodness of your motherly heart, and that through the flame of your heart we may be converted. Amen.

Father, You prepared the heart of the Virgin Mary to be a fitting home for Your Holy Spirit. By her prayers, may we become more worthy temples of Your glory. Grant this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

MARY IMMACULATE NOVENA

O MARY IMMACULATE, Lily of Purity, I congratulate thee,
because from the very first instant of thy conception
thou wast filled with grace. I thank and adore the
Most Holy Trinity for having imparted to thee favors so sublime.
O, Mary, full of grace, help me to share, even though just a little,
in the fullness of grace so wonderfully bestowed on thee,
in thine Immaculate Conception. With lively confidence in thy
never-failing intercession, we beseech thee to obtain for us
the intentions of this Novena [mention them] and also that purity
of mind, heart and body necessary to unite us with God. Amen.

NOVENA PRAYER

IMMACULATE HEART of Mary, full of love for God and mankind,
and of compassion for sinners, I consecrate myself entirely to you.
I entrust to you the salvation of my soul. May my heart be ever
united with yours, so that I may hate sin, love God, and my
neighbor, and reach eternal life together with those whom I love.
Mediatrix of All Graces and Mother of Mercy, remember
the infinite treasure which your Divine Son has merited by His
sufferings and which He has confided to you for us, your children.
Filled with confidence in your motherly Heart, which I venerate
and love, I come to you with my pressing needs.
Through the merits of your loving Heart, and for the sake of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus, obtain for me the favor I ask:
[Mention your request.]

Dearest Mother, if what I ask for should not be according to
God's Will, pray that I may receive that which will be of greater
benefit to my soul. May I experience the kindness of your
motherly Heart and the power of your intercession with Jesus
during life and at the hour of my death. Amen.

Consecration of the Family to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
and Immaculate Heart of Mary

(done traditionally on the Feast of the Holy Family)

Most Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary, united in perfect love, as You look upon us with mercy and caring, we consecrate our hearts, our lives, our family to You.  We know the beautiful example of your home in Nazareth was meant to be a model for each of our families.  We hope to have, with your help, the unity and strong, enduring love You gave to one another.

May our home be filled with joy.  May sincere affection, patience, tolerance and mutual respect be freely given to all.  May our prayers be filled with the needs of others, not just ourselves and may we always be close to your sacraments.  Bless those who are present, as well as those who are absent, both the living and the dead;  may peace be among us and when we are tested, grant us the Christian acceptance of God's will.

Keep our family close to Your Hearts, may your special protection be with us always.  Most Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, hear our prayers.

Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and tender Mother of all people, I consecrate myself to you and to your Immaculate Heart, and recommend to you my family, my country, and the whole human race.
Please accept my consecration, dearest Mother, and use me as you wish, to accomplish your designs upon the world.
O Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, rule over me, and teach me how to allow the Heart of Jesus to rule and triumph in me and around me, as it has ruled and triumphed in you. Amen.

Act of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart

Most Holy Virgin and our beloved Mother, we listen with grief to the complaints of the Immaculate Heart, surrounded with the thorns which ungrateful men place therein at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. Moved by the ardent desire of loving thee as our Mother and of promoting a true devotion to thy Immaculate Heart, we prostrate ourselves at thy feet to prove the sorrow we feel for the grief that men cause thee and to atone by means of our prayers and sacrifices for the offenses with which men return thy tender love.
Obtain for them and for us the pardon of so many sins. A word from thee will obtain grace and forgiveness for all.
Hasten, O Lady, the conversion of sinners that they may love Jesus and cease to offend God, already so much offended, and thus avoid eternal punishment.         Turn thine eyes of mercy towards us so that henceforth we may love God with all our heartwhile on earth and enjoy Him forever in Heaven.  Amen.

This picture, somewhat mysterious in origin, was discovered at the time of the 1918 armistice in the cellar of a boarding school where Berthe Petit, a humble Franciscan Tertiary, had been educated. After the troops had departed, one of the Bernardine nuns in putting things in order found a piece of cardboard on which was pasted a pornographic picture and she tore it off to consign it to flames. To her astonishment, she found that it covered this beautiful representation of the Blessed Virgin! Prayer before this picture has brought signal favors.Novena Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

O Most Blessed Mother, heart of love, heart of mercy, ever listening, caring, consoling, hear our prayer. As your children, we implore your intercession with Jesus your Son. Receive with understanding and compassion the petitions we place before you today, especially ...(special intention).

We are comforted in knowing your heart is ever open to those who ask for your prayer. We trust to your gentle care and intercession, those whom we love and who are sick or lonely or hurting. Help all of us, Holy Mother, to bear our burdens in this life until we may share eternal life and peace with God forever. Amen.

A Solemn Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Most Holy Virgin Mary, tender Mother of men, to fulfill the desires of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the request of the Vicar of Your Son on earth, we consecrate ourselves and our families to your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and we recommend to You, all the people of our country and all the world.

Please accept our consecration, dearest Mother, and use us as You wish to accomplish Your designs in the world.

O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and Queen of the World, rule over us, together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, Our King. Save us from the spreading flood of modern paganism; kindle in our hearts and homes the love of purity, the practice of a virtuous life, an ardent zeal for souls, and a desire to pray the Rosary more faithfully.

We come with confidence to You, O Throne of Grace and Mother of Fair Love. Inflame us with the same Divine Fire which has inflamed Your own Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart. Make our hearts and homes Your shrine, and through us, make the Heart of Jesus, together with your rule, triumph in every heart and home. Amen.

--Venerable Pope Pius XII

Act of Consecration to Mary's Immaculate Heart
as written by St. Louis Marie deMontfort

Hail, Mary, most beloved daughter of the eternal Father; hail, Mary, most admirable mother of the Son; hail, Mary, most faithful spouse of the Holy Spirit; hail, Mary, Mother most dear, Lady most lovable, Queen most powerful!  Hail, Mary, my joy, my glory, my heart and soul.  You are all mine through God’s mercy, but I am all yours in justice.  Yet I do not belong sufficiently to you, and so once again, as a slave who always belongs to his master, I give myself wholly to you, reserving nothing for myself or for others.

If you still see anything in me that has not been given to you, please take it now.  Make yourself completely owner of all my capabilities.  Destroy in me everything that is displeasing to God.  Uproot it and bring it to nothing.  Implant in me all that you deem to be good; improve it and make it increase in me.

May the light of your faith dispel the darkness of my mind!  May your deep humility take the place of my pride.  May your heavenly contemplation put an end to the distractions of my wandering imagination.  May your continuous vision of God fill my memory with his presence.  May the burning love of your heart inflame the coldness of mine.  May your virtues take the place of my sins.  May your merits be my adornment and make up for my unworthiness before God.  Finally, most dearly beloved Mother, grant, if it be possible, that I may have no other spirit but yours to know Jesus and his divine will.  May I have no soul but yours to praise and glorify the Lord.  May I have no heart but yours to love God purely and ardently as you love him.

I do not ask for visions or revelations, for sensible devotion or even spiritual pleasures.  It is your privilege to see God clearly in perpetual light.  It is your privilege to savor the delights of heaven where nothing is without sweetness.  It is your privilege to triumph gloriously in heaven at the right hand of your Son without further humiliation, and to command angels, men, and demons, without resistance on their part.  It is your privilege to dispose at your own choice of all the good gifts of God without any exception.

Such, most holy Mary, is the excellent portion that the Lord has given you, and which will never be taken from you, and which gives me great joy.  As for my portion here on earth, I wish only to have a share in yours, that is, to have simple faith without seeing or tasting, to suffer joyfully without the consolation of men, to die daily to myself without flinching, to work gallantly for you even until death without any self-interest, as the most worthless of your slaves.  The only grace I beg you in your kindness to obtain for me is that every day and moment of my life I may say this threefold Amen:

Amen, so be it, to all you did upon earth; Amen, so be it, to all you are doing now in heaven; Amen, so be it, to all you are doing in my soul.  In that way, you and you alone will fully glorify Jesus in me during all my life and throughout eternity.  Amen.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

Any formula may be used to consecrate oneself to the Mother of God, as long as it involves a total oblation of oneself. As a suggestion, one of the following consecrations could be renewed each first Saturday with the shorter formula renewed daily.

  1. 0 Virgin Mary, most powerful Mother of Mercy, Queen of Heaven and earth, in accordance with your wish made known at Fatima, I consecrate myself today to your Immaculate Heart. To you I entrust all that I have, all that I am. Reign over me, dearest Mother, that I may be yours in prosperity, in adversity, in joy and in sorrow, in health and in sickness, in life and in death.

Most compassionate Heart of Mary, Queen of Virgins, watch over my mind and heart and preserve me from the deluge of impurity which you lamented so sorrowfully at Fatima. I want to be pure like you. I want to atone for the many crimes committed against Jesus and you. I want to call down upon this country and the whole world the peace of God in justice and charity.

Mindful of this consecration, I now promise to strive to imitate you by the practice of the Christian virtues without regard for human respect. I resolve to receive Holy Communion on the first Saturday of every month when possible, and to offer daily five decades of the Rosary, with all my sacrifices in the spirit of penance and reparation. Amen.

  2. I, (state your name), a faithless sinner, renew and ratify today in thy Heart, O Immaculate Mother, the vows of my Baptism; I renounce forever Satan, his pomps and works; and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be more faithful to Him than I have ever been before.

Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, in the presence of all the heavenly court, I choose thee this day for my Mother and Mistress. I deliver and consecrate to thee, and to thy Immaculate Heart, as thy child and slave of love, my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions, past, present and future; leaving to thee the entire and full right of disposing of me, and all that belongs to me, without exception, according to thy good pleasure, for the greater glory of God, in time and in eternity. Amen.

Short daily renewal of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, I renew my consecration to you and to your Immaculate Heart. Please accept me, my dear Mother, and use me as you wish to accomplish your designs upon the world. I am all yours, my Mother, my Queen, and all that I have is yours.

Consecration to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom,
through the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Eternal and Incarnate Wisdom! O sweetest and most adorable Jesus! True God and true man, only Son of the Eternal Father and of Mary, always virgin! I adore Thee profoundly in the bosom and splendors of the Father during eternity; and I adore Thee also in the virginal bosom of Mary, Thy most worthy Mother, in the time of Thine Incarnation.

I give Thee thanks for that Thou hast annihilated Thyself, taking the form of a slave in order to rescue me from the cruel slavery of the devil. I praise and glorify Thee for that Thou hast been pleased to submit Thyself to Mary, Thy Holy Mother, in all things, in order to make me Thy faithful slave through her. But alas! ungrateful and faithless as I have been, I have not kept the promises which I made so solemnly to Thee in my baptism; I have not fulfilled my obligations; I do not deserve to be called Thy child, nor yet Thy slave; and as there is nothing in me which does not merit Thine anger and Thy repulse, I dare not come by myself before Thy most Holy and August Majesty. It is through her that I hope to obtain of Thee contrition, the pardon of my sins, and the acquisition and preservation of Wisdom.

Hail, then, O Immaculate Mary, living Tabernacle of the Divinity, where the Eternal Wisdom willed to be hidden and to be adored by angels and by men! Hail, O Queen of Heaven and Earth, to whose empire everything is subject which is under God. Hail, O sure refuge of sinners, whose mercy fails no one. Hear the desires which I have of the Divine Wisdom; and for that end receive the vows and offerings which in my lowliness I present to Thee. I, (NAME), a faithless sinner--I renew and ratify today in Thy hands the vows of my baptism; I renounce forever Satan, his pomps and works and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be more faithful to Him than I have ever been before.

In the presence of all the heavenly court, I choose thee this day for my Mother and Mistress. I deliver and consecrate to thee, as thy slave, my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions, past, present, and future; leaving to thee the entire and full right of disposing of me, and all that belongs to me, without exception according to thy good pleasure, for the greater glory of God in time and in eternity.

Receive, O benignant Virgin, this little offering of my slavery, in honor of, and in union with, that subjection which the Eternal Wisdom deigned to have to thy maternity, in homage to the power which both of You have over this poor sinner, and in thanksgiving for the privileges with which the Holy Trinity has favored thee. I declare that I wish henceforth, as thy true slave, to seek thy honor and to obey thee in all things.

O admirable Mother, present me to thy dear Son as His eternal slave so that as He has redeemed me by thee, He may receive me! O Mother of Mercy, grant me the grace to obtain the true Wisdom of God, and for that end receive me among those whom thou lovest and teachest, whom thou leadest, nourishest, and protectest as thy children and thy slaves.

O faithful Virgin, make me in all things so perfect a disciple, imitator and slave of the Incarnate Wisdom, Jesus Christ, thy Son, that I may attain, by thine intercession and by thine example, to the fullness of His age on earth and of His glory in heaven. Amen.

Chaplet in Honor of the Immaculate Heart

V. Incline unto my aid, O God!
R. O Lord, make haste to help me!
V. Glory be to the Father, etc.
R. As it was in the beginning, etc.

1. Immaculate Virgin, who, conceived without sin, didst direct every movement of thy most pure heart to that God Who was ever the object of thy love, and who was ever most submissive to His will, obtain for me the grace to hate sin with my whole heart, and to learn of thee to live in perfect resignation to the will of God.

Pray 1 Our Father, 7 Hail Mary's

Heart transpierced with pain and woe, Set my heart with love aglow!

2. I marvel, Mary, at thy deep humility, through which thy blessed heart was troubled at the gracious message brought thee by Gabriel, the archangel, that thou wast chosen Mother of the Son of the Most High, and through which thou didst proclaim thyself his humble handmaid. Wherefore, in great confusion at the sight of my pride, I ask thee for the grace of a contrite and humble heart, that, knowing my own misery, I may obtain that crown of glory promised to the truly humble of heart.

Pray 1 Our Father, 7 Hail Mary's

Heart transpierced with pain and woe, Set my heart with love aglow!

3. Blessed Virgin, who, in thy sweetest heart, didst keep as a precious treasure the words of Jesus thy Son, and pondering on the lofty mysteries they contained, didst learn to live for God alone, how doth my cold heart confound me! O dearest Mother! Get me grace so to meditate within my heart upon God's holy law that I may strive to follow thee in the fervent practice of every Christian virtue.

Pray 1 Our Father, 7 Hail Mary's

Heart transpierced with pain and woe, Set my heart with love aglow!

4. Glorious Queen of Martyrs, whose sacred heart was pierced in thy Son's bitter Passion by the sword, whereof the holy man Simeon had prophesied, gain for my heart true courage and a holy patience to bear the troubles and misfortunes of this miserable life, that so by crucifying my flesh with its desires while following the mortification of the Cross, I may indeed show myself to be a true child of thine.

Pray 1 Our Father, 7 Hail Mary's

Heart transpierced with pain and woe, Set my heart with love aglow!

5. O Mary, Mystical Rose, whose loving heart, burning with the living fire of charity, did accept us for thy sons at the foot of the Cross, becoming thus our tender Mother, make me feel the sweetness of thy maternal heart and thy power with Jesus, that when menaced by the perils of this mortal life, and most of all in the dread hour of death, my heart united with thine may love my Jesus then and through all ages. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 7 Hail Mary's

Heart transpierced with pain and woe, Set my heart with love aglow!

Let us now turn to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, that He may inflame us with His holy love!

O Divine Heart of Jesus! To Thee I consecrate myself, full of deep gratitude for the many blessings I have received and daily do receive from Thy boundless charity. With my whole heart I thank thee for having, in addition to them all, vouchsafed to give me Thy own most holy Mother, giving me to her as a child, in the person of the beloved disciple. Let my heart ever burn with love for Thee, finding in Thy sweetest Heart its peace, its refuge, and its happiness.
