Prayers for Priests and Ministers of the Church

to Shepherd Me, O God

Lord our God, You guide Your people by the ministry of priests. Keep them faithful in obedient service to You that by their life and ministry they may bring You glory in Christ. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Heavenly Father grant that our priests be strengthened and healed by the power of the Eucharist they celebrate. May the Word they proclaim give them courage and wisdom. We pray that all those whom they seek to serve may see in them the love and care of Jesus, our Eternal High Priest, Who is Lord for ever and ever. Amen

Mary, Mother of the Church, look tenderly upon your sons, our priests.

Joseph, patron of the Universal Church, pray for us all.

~~ Southwark Laity Commission, 1993

Eternal God, please bless our priests, who represent You on this earth. Make them more greatly aware of the grace that You pour out through them when they minister the sacraments, and help them to fall more deeply in love with You after each and every Mass that they celebrate. Please strengthen our priests, who shepherd Your flock, when they are in doubt of their faith, that they may be examples of Your Truth and guide us always on the path to You. We ask these things of You, our Eternal Priest. Amen.

Prayer at a Son's Entrance into the Priesthood

Heavenly Father, You have called my son to be a priest and he has generously responded to that call. I pray that he will be ever faithful in this new state
and happy with the way of life lying ahead.
Help me to be ever ready to render my assistance whenever and however
it may be needed. Let me always remember that it is an honor to give one's son to You who gave him to us in the first place. Amen.

For a Priest at His First Mass

O Holy Spirit, Your servant who is about to celebrate this Mass shares the holy priesthood of Jesus and Your apostolate. Enkindle in his heart the flames that transformed the disciples in the Upper Room. Let him be no longer an ordinary man but a man living to transfuse the divine life into the souls of others. Give him an ardent desire for the inner life as well as Your consolation and strength. Enable him to see that even here below there is no true happiness unless his life partakes of Yours and that of the Heart of Jesus in the bosom of the Father.

Anniversary of Ordination

Most loving Jesus, today is the anniversary of the day on which, despite my unworthiness and through your goodness, You conferred on me the dignity of the priesthood. You made me not only your minister but the voice of your sublime wisdom as well, and the dispenser of your mysteries. My soul is filled with joy, love, and gratitude for this singular privilege which I have received. At the same time, I am sad and troubled for having so often, and without reason, failed to respond as I ought to your great generosity.
I beg the continual assistance of your infinite goodness which will enable me to accomplish the sublime work for which You have commissioned me. With your light in my mind and your strength in my heart I shall daily dispense in greater abundance the fruits of your redemption to all people. Amen.

Most gracious God, lovingly heed our prayers and enlighten the hearts of those whom You have called. Enable them to minister worthily to Your mysteries, to love You with an everlasting love, and to attain joys without end.

Prayer for Seminarians

Lord Jesus Christ, we pray for these men whom You have called to discern priesthood. We beg Your continued blessings on our Diocese and families. Call forth even more men of generous spirit and fervent love whom You desire for this holy work. Amen.

St. Joseph, pray for us.

Another Prayer for Seminarians

O Jesus, Eternal High Priest, I offer You through Your Immaculate Mother Mary, Your Own Percious Blood, in all the Masses throughout the world, as petition for graces for all seminarians, Your future priests. Give them humility, meekness, prudence, and a burning zeal for souls. Fill their hearts with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to know and love the Church, that they may always and everywhere speak, act, and think with her, the glorious spouse of Christ. Teach them generosity and detachment from worldly goods; but above all, teach them to know You and to love the One and Only Eternal Priest.

Good Shepherd of Souls, hear this my prayer for saintly priests. Amen.

For Priestly Vocations

Father, in Your plan for our salvation You provide shepherds for Your people. Fill Your Church with the spirit of courage and love. Raise up worthy ministers for Your altars and ardent but gentle servants of the gospel. Amen.

Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood

O Lord Jesus Christ, great High-Priest, we ask You to call many worthy souls to Your holy priesthood. Enlighten the superiors in the choice of candidates, the spiritual directors in guiding them, and the professors in instructing them. Lead the seminarians daily in unerring footsteps, so that they may become priests who are models of purity, possessors of wisdom, and heroes of sacrifice; steeped in humility and aflame with Divine Love; apostles of Your glory and sanctifiers of souls. Amen.

Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us;
obtain for us many holy priests.

St. Vincent de Paul, protector of the clergy, pray that God will bless us with many good priests.

Offering of the Sick for Vocations

Dear Lord, here is a new day you have given me in which to love you and to help others to love you. Above all things, help me to love and accept your holy will. Lord Jesus, in giving me this cross of my illness, it was your desire to bring me nearer to you Divine Heart. I want to bring others also to know you better, to love you more, and for this I know that good and holy priests are necessary; so I will offer my cross, united with yours, for vocations to the holy priesthood. Amen.

Teach me, O Lord, to do your will, for you are my God. Keep me, Lord, as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. O Lord, remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us. Amen.

Divine Saviour Jesus Christ, Who has entrusted the whole work of Your redemption and the welfare and salvation of the world, to priests as Your representatives, I offer You, through the hands of Your most holy Mother, all the prayers, works, sacrifices, joys, and sorrows of this day for the sanctification of Your priests.

Give us truly holy priests who seek nothing but Your greater glory and the salvation of our souls. Bless their words and prayers at the altar, in the confessional, in the pulpit, in all their work for the young, the sick, and the aged.

O Mary, Mother of the High Priest, protect all priests from dangers to their holy vocation. Obtain for me a true spirit of faith and humble obedience, so that I may see the priest as a representative of God and willingly follow him in the Way, the Truth, and the Life of Christ. Amen.

For the Ministers of the Church

Father, You have taught the ministers of Your Church not to desire that they be served but to serve their brothers and sisters. May they be effective in their work and persevering in their prayer, performing their ministry with gentleness and concern for others. Amen.

Prayer for Religious Vocations

Father, You call all who believe in You to grow perfect in love by following in the footsteps of Christ Your Son. May those whom You have chosen to serve You as religious provide by their way of life a convincing sign of Your kingdom for the Church and the whole world. Amen.

Prayer for Vocations

Lord, You told us that "The harvest indeed is great but the laborers are few. Pray, therefore, the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His fields." We ask You to strengthen us as we follow the vocation to which You have called us. We pray particularly for those called to serve as priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons:

Those whom You have called,
Those You are calling now,
Those You will call in the future.

May they be open and responsive to the call of serving Your people. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O Jesus, Eternal  Priest, keep all Thy priests within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart, where none may harm them. Keep unstained their anointed hands which daily touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips purpled with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts sealed with the sublime marks of Thy glorious priesthood. Let Thy holy love surround them and shield them from the world's contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they have ministered, be here below, their joy and consolation and in Heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown.  Amen

Prayer for Our Priests

Almighty God and Father, we prayerfully ask You to give Your Church holy priests, men of charity, goodness and prayer. Good Shepherds, like Your Son, Jesus. Through the prompting of Your grace, may they always realize that they are Your chosen ones, called by name. Comfort them more dearly when they are discouraged, lonely, or greatly beset by the temptations of the evil one. Help them in their troubles to know that they are Your holy anointed ones; that with You they can do all things. We ask these favors for Your priests in the world, through Your Son Jesus Christ, the first and eternal priest. Amen.

Almighty God, look upon the Face of Jesus Who is the eternal High Priest, and have compassion on Your priests in today's world. They are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation. Keep them close to You so the enemy may not prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.

O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests, for the unfaithful and tepid ones; for those laboring at home and abroad in distant mission fields; for those who are tempted; for those who are lonely and desolate; for those who are dying; and for those who are in purgatory.

But above all, I recommend to You the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I have assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who instructed me or helped me by their encouragement. I pray devoutly for all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, in particular for (mention your special intention for your special priest). O Jesus, keep them all close to Your Heart and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.

O Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us; obtain for us many and holy priests.

A Friar's Prayer

May my life of prayer and service, O Lord, show those I serve the reality of Your love. Make me poor, chaste, and holy that I may be an example to all who cross my path. May everything I do tell others I am happy serving them; may my life be a sign to your people, especially to the young who so carefully observe me, of the joy that should be mine in my vocation. Use me and my work, O Lord, that I may be the means of bringing fervent vocations to my Franciscan family. Amen.

Prayer to Pope St. Pius X

Glorious Pope of the Eucharist, St. Pius X, you sought "to restore all things in Christ." Obtain for me a true love of Jesus so that I may live only for Him. Help me to acquire a lively fervor and a sincere will to strive for sanctity of life, and that I may avail myself of the riches of the Holy Eucharist in sacrifice and sacrament. By your love for Mary, mother and queen of all, inflame my heart with tender devotion to her.
Blessed model of the priesthood, obtain for us holy, dedicated priests, and increase vocations to the religious life. Dispel confusion and hatred and anxiety, and incline our hearts to peace and concord, so that all nations will place themselves under the sweet reign of Christ. Amen.

St. Pius X, pray for me, and (mention any particular intention).

Litany for Priests

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, give all priests Thy spirit of humility;
Jesus, poor and worn out for souls, give all priests Thy spirit of zeal;
Jesus, full of patience and mercy for sinners, give all priests Thy spirit of compassion;
Jesus, victim for the sins of the world, give all priests Thy spirit of sacrifice;
Jesus, lover of the little and the poor, give all priests Thy spirit of charity.
Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us; and obtain for us numerous and holy priests and religious. Amen.

For Vocations

Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd. You know each of us and You call us by name to serve in faith. Help us respond generously to Your Voice. Give courage and guidance to those You call to the priesthood and the diaconate, to religious life and lay ministry, so they may respond wholeheartedly and serve devotedly. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Therese Prayer for Vocations

St. Therese, Little Flower, you are "love in the heart of the Church." You dedicated your life as a Carmelite Nun for good Priests to serve God's people. From your privileged place in God's Heart, I ask you to stir up responsive hearts in young men to follow Jesus as good and holy priests and religious. Bless our Church with loyal servants of the Gospel.

Renew our Church in love by igniting the love of the young men Jesus calls. We need your help, intercession, and intervention today, Beloved Patron of Priests. Amen.

~~ taken from prayer card issued by the Society of the Little Flower

Lord Jesus, You have chosen Your priests from among us and sent them out to proclaim Your Word and to act in Your Name. For so great a gift to Your Church, we give You praise and thanksgiving. We ask You to fill them with the fire of Your Love, that their ministry may reveal Your Presence in the Church. Since they are earthen vessels, we pray that Your power shine out through their weaknesses. In their afflictions let them never be crushed; in their doubts never despair; in temptation never be destroyed; in persecution never abandoned. Inspire them through prayer to live each day the mystery of Your dying and rising. In times of weakness send them Your Spirit, and help them to praise Your heavenly Father and pray for poor sinners. By the same Holy Spirit put Your Words on their lips and Your Love in their hearts, to bring good news to the poor and healing to the brokenhearted. And may the gift of Mary Your mother, to the disciple whom You loved, be Your gift to every priest. Grant that she who formed You in her human image, may form them in Your Divine Image, by the power of Your Spirit, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood

Lord Jesus, You invite us to pray the Lord of the harvest that He send laborers into His harvest.

Lord and God of all, call to the priesthood men on fire with Your Divine Love, who will be the voice of the Good Shepherd to the scattered sheep of the flock.

R. Lord of the harvest, send laborers into Your harvest.

Lord and Saviour, bless us with holy priests. Through their ministry may Your life-giving Presence in the sacraments be always present in Your Church.

R. Lord of the harvest, send laborers into Your harvest.

Lord and Giver of Life, raise up men filled with Your power and with great missionary zeal, so that all who dwell in darkness may come to live in the light of Christ.

R. Lord of the harvest, send laborers into Your harvest.

Lord Jesus, You called chosen men to be with You; to preach the good news of salvation; to have authority over the powers of darkness. Send Your Holy Spirit upon the men You have chosen for the priestly ministry. May they answer Your call and follow You with generous hearts. Amen.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Prayer to St. John Vianney

Saintly Pastor of Ars and splendid model of all servants of souls, you were considered not very bright, but you possessed the wisdom of the Saints.
You were a true pontifex, a bridge-builder, between God and His people as countless penitents streamed to your confessional. Inspire all priests to be dedicated mediators between God and His people in our day. Amen.

Prayer for Specific Priest

O Jesus, Eternal High Priest, live in [name of priest], act in him, speak in and through him. Think Thy thoughts in his mind, love through his heart. Give him Thine Own dispositions and feelings. Teach, lead and guide him always. Correct, enlighten and expand his thoughts and behavior. Possess his soul; take over his entire personality and life. Replace him with Thyself. Incline him to constant adoration and thanksgiving; pray in and through him. Let him live in Thee and keep him in this intimate union always. O Mary, Immaculate Conception, Mother of Jesus and Mother of priests, pray and intercede for [name of Priest]. Amen.

Prayer for the Priests in Purgatory

My Jesus, by the sorrows Thou didst suffer in Thine Agony in the Garden, in Thy Scourging and Crowning with thorns, in the Way to Calvary,  in Thy Crucifixion and Death, have mercy on the souls of priests in Purgatory, especially those most forgotten and who no one else to pray for them. I wish to remember all those priests who ministered to me, the priests my heart have never forgotten, and for those that I no longer recall due to my frailty of memory.

Do Thou deliver them from the dire torments they endure; call them and admit them to Thy most sweet embrace in Paradise.

Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary, then:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them!

Pope St. Pius X and Ven. Pope Pius XII, pray for us and especially for our priests.

Prayer for a Deceased Priest

Incline Thine ear, O Lord, unto our prayers wherein we humbly pray Thee to show Thy mercy upon the soul of Thy servant [name of priest], whom Thou hast commanded to pass out of this world, that Thou wouldst place him in the region of peace and light, and bid him be a partaker of Thy Saints. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Novena In Honor Of Saint John Vianney
(to be prayed July 27 through August 4)

JULY 27: ARDENT FAITH (DAY 1)vianney.GIF (21764 bytes)

Saint John Marie Baptist Vianney you were born of a deeply religious mother; from her you received the Holy Faith; you learned to love God and to pray. At a young age, you were seen kneeling in the front of the statue of Mary. Your soul was supernaturally carried towards the things on High. Despite the high cost, you answered your vocation!

Against many obstacles and contradictions, you had to fight and suffer to become the perfect priest which you were. But your deep spirit of faith supported you in all these battles. 0 Great Saint you know the desire of my soul; I would like to serve God better; from Him I have received so many good things. For this, obtain for me more courage and especially the depth of faith.

Many of my thoughts, words, and actions are useless for my sanctification and for my salvation, because this supernatural spirit does not stir up my life. Help me to be better in the future. Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for ... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

Saint John Marie Baptist Vianney, what confidence the people had in your prayers! You could not leave your old rectory or your humble church without being surrounded by imploring souls, who appealed to you as they would have appealed to Jesus Himself during His earthly life. And you, O good Saint, gave them hope by your words, which were full of love for God.

You, who had always counted entirely on the heart of God, obtain for me a deep filial trust in His Providence. As the hope of divine goods fills my heart, give me courage and help me to always obey the Commandments of God.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for ... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

Saint John Marie Baptist Vianney because of your love of God you showed great charity towards your neighbor. You could not preach on the Love of God without burning tears of love. During your last years, it seemed as though you could not talk about any thing else or live for anything else. Thus you sacrificed yourself to your neighbor by consoling, absolving and sanctifying them to the limits of your strength.

Your charity inspires me to greater love of God, a love which is shown more by acts then by words. Help me to love my neighbor generously as Christ loves them.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for ... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

Saint John Mary Baptist Vianney, you were so adamant against sin, yet so sympathetic and so ready to welcome the sinner. I come to you today as if you were still alive, as if I were kneeling at your feet and you could hear me. Bend towards me, listen to the repentant confidence for the weaknesses and miserable deeds of mine.

Priest of the Lord, inexhaustible Confessor, obtain for me the horror for sin. You wanted us First to avoid the occasion of sin. I want totake your advice and make the resolution to break bad habits and to avoid the dangerous occasions of sin. Help me today to examine my conscience.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

O Holy Priest of Ars, you knew how important was a good confession for the Christian life. It was to procure the happy fruits of millions of souls that you agreed to be in an uncomfortable confessional, which was like a prison, up to 15 to 16 hours on certain days.

I will try to develop the habit of frequent confession, to prepare properly each time and to have always regret for my sins, so that the grace of final perseverance but also the sanctification of my soul will be assured. Ask this grace for me.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for ... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

O Holy Priest of Ars, whose only comfort in this world was the real presence of Jesus in the tabernacle, was it not your great joy to distribute the Eucharist to the pilgrims who visited you? You refused Communion to the souls who refused to reform but to souls of goodwill you opened wide the doors of the Eucharistic Feast.

You, who each day at Holy Mass received Holy Communion with great loves, give me some of your fervor. With freedom from mortal sin, obtain for me a sincere desire to profit from receiving Holy Communion.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

O Holy Priest of Ars, the infamous attacks of the devil which you had to suffer and the trials which disheartened you by fatigue would not make you give up the sublime task of converting souls. The devil came to you for many years to disturb your short rest but you won because of mortification and prayers.

Powerful protector, you know the temptor's desire to harm my baptized and believing soul. He would have me sin, by rejecting the Holy Sacraments and the life of virtue. But good Saint of Ars dispel from me the traces of the enemy.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for ... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

O Holy Priest of Ars, a witness of your life made this magnificent praise of you:
'We would have taken him for an angel in a mortal body."

You so edified others: the modesty and the exquisite purity radiated from your body. With such charm and with such enthusiasm you preached to others about these beautiful virtues which you said resembled the perfume of a vineyard in bloom.

Please I beg you to join your entreaties to those of Mary Immaculate and Saint Philomena in order that I guard always, as God asks me, the purity of my heart. You, who have directed so many souls towards the heights of virtue, defend me in temptations and obtain for me the strength to conquer them.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for ... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be

O Holy Priest of Ars, your precious remains are contained in a magnificent reliquary, the donation from the priests of France. But this earthly glory is only a very pale image of the unspeakable glory which you are enjoying with God. During the time you were on earth, you used to repeat in your dejected hours, 'one will rest in the other life." It is done, you are in eternal peace, and eternal happiness.

I desire to follow you one day. Until then, I hear you saying to me:
"You should work and fight as long as you are in the world."

Teach me then to work for the salvation of my soul, to spread the good news and good example and to do good towards those around me in order that I will receive the happiness of the Elect with you.

Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession. Pray for me during this novena especially for ... (mention silently your special intentions).

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be
