Serenity Prayers

God,
grant me the serenity to accept the things
I cannot change....
Courage to change the things I can
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living
one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His
Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
and supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
written by Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr, 1926

Eternal Father, it isn't often but once in a while I experience a highly refined sense of serenity. At such times I feel very close to You, happy with my life, and ready to do anything asked of me. I realize that these are moments of sensible consolation and such consolation is never permanent---still it is very nice to experience. Grant me the grace to remain just as attached to You when I am deprived of consolation. Let me learn to concentrate on what is important in my relationship with You, so that I may bear witness to You in every circumstance of my life. Amen.

May Christ support us all the day long, till the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then, in His mercy, may He give us a safe lodging, and holy rest and peace at the last. Amen.
